What you need to know about EV charging
Green energy is our future and from 2035, all new cars will be fuelled by electricity. In this section, we have answered some of the most frequently asked questions regarding electric vehicles (EV) and dedicated charging points.

What exactly is an EV and how does it differ from a hybrid plug-in vehicle?
An EV is a vehicle that runs on electricity alone. Unlike a hybrid plug-in vehicle (HPEV) that relies on petrol or diesel to power the electric motor, an EV has large cell rechargeable batteries built into the vehicle and it is the electrical charge from these batteries which powers the electric motor.
EVs emit far less carbon emissions than vehicles that run on petrol or diesel and are therefore better for the environment. Hybrid plug-in vehicles emit less carbon emissions than vehicles running solely on petrol or diesel, but are not as green as vehicles running completely on electricity.
Do I need to use an EV charging point to charge my EV and how long will it take to fully charge?
Your electric vehicle can be charged using the standard plug that is supplied, but a dedicated EV charging point is a much more cost-effective solution. A standard electrical socket may overheat when charging an EV and is the slowest method.
It is estimated that it will take approximately 20 hours to fully charge your EV using a standard socket. On the other hand, a dedicated EV charging point will enable you to charge your vehicle overnight so that it is ready to drive the next morning.
How do I charge an EV?
Electric vehicles can be charged at one of the many public charging points throughout the UK, or better still, from an EV charging point installed at your home.
